and welcome to GFLClan.ru!
GFLClan.ru will be the new host of GFLs Zombie Escape server. This post will explain the reasoning behind the move, and hopefully answer any questions you might have.
The idea of moving the server away from GFL first arose when GFL management reached out to its community facing financial problems. Without going into too much detail, a thorough analysis revealed severe mismanagement. From overpriced servers and unoptimized infrastructures, to falsely operating under the pretense of non-profit. These issues, combined with an unwillingness to adapt, prompted us to take action ourselves.
Read me for clarification
There is a lot of confusion about various things right now, I hope to bring clarity with this (hopefully relatively small) overview.
Yesterday (17th of april) me and Botox executed a plan that had been in the making for some time now, where we move the GFL ZE server to another dedicated machine.
It has been split from GFL in every way, different physical machine, forum, donation system (and pool).
Now then, for the "why's" -
Roughly a month and a half ago, a post was made where we announced we're in dire need of money. A revamp of the VIP system and MOTD ads should have fixed our shortage in money.
Which naturally raised questions about efficiency, and possibly even honesty. Since Botox has (and has had) access to the SQL, and with that access to the Paypal API, we took the liberty to take a look for ourselves.
Now it's time for some math. March 2015 we had 6800+ USD in the Paypal. (even peaking at 7k+ IIRC). source: http://web.archive.org/web/20150325005145/http://gflclan.com/index.html
Since March 2015, we've had an average income of 2160 USD. source: https://p.botox.bz/view/33901c9b#L16 net income into paypal (i.e. successful paypal transactions, refunds/failed transaction taken into account)
Knowing the monthly expenses are 1200, the following (rough) estimate follows: 6800 + 2160x11 - 1200x11 = 17360
Seventeen thousand going missing, how is this possible. Obviously there is some room for error here, there is also still some money in the Paypal right now, but 15k+ is basically garantueed. All this is just march 2015 - feb 2016.
Ideally I would've reached out to the other council, but what would happen? How could GFL possibly recover from shit like this? The plan was to quietly move the server, with vague perceived reasoning.
It would just be perceived a power/money grab on our side, and we wouldn't have had this situation at all (i.e. minimizing damage done to GFL as a whole). Ingorance is bliss I suppose.
The fact that Roy happened to be out of town when this happened is pure coincedence and wouldn't have mattered either way. We never had the intention to quietly demote soja (which wouldn't even be possible). The plan exclusively to safeguard ZE from this mess.
I will leave my personal feelings and opinions out for now, this post is loaded enough as it stands.
I won't reveal the source of these numbers publicly, maybe you can ask Roy about this.
We have a good idea of the implications that come with splitting from an existing community. We have no intention of badmouthing, or even hurting GFL (though obviously inevitable). Whichever way this turns out, know that our intentions are to continuously preserve and improve CSS Zombie Escape as a gamemode with an as high as possible QoL. The issues GFL faces as an organization are second to this, ZE is and has always been the main priority.
Even with these things in mind, we believe the pros outweigh the cons in attempting to create an alternative, and possibly the replacement to GFL ZE.
Let's see what's changing.
The new server will be hosted by OVH in their Canadian datacenter. It will be located close to Montreal, Canada. We're expecting latency to decrease (which is better) across the line. As we're moving slighty East, our West Coast players may see a slight increase in latency. OVH does generally have great routing, so even for the West Coast, the increase in latency should be marginal.
The server will be rocking a i7-4790K at 4.4GHz, which is a considerable upgrade from the E3-1270 v3 on the old server. Here is a comparison (single-threaded performance is the most relevant for the source engine).
The servers monthly base cost is 50€.
An additional one time 50€ payment, or 10€/month for 6 months (we're opting for the latter), pushes the monthly cost to 60€/month. Okay, it seems like we don't have to pay a setup fee, thanks OVH. We're also purchasing 5 additional IPs, which is a one time 10€ payment.
For more information on the server you can visit the So you Start website.
The donations will be broken down into three layers, or "tiers". Each tier naturally enjoys greater rewards.
Each tier costs "itself" in Euros per month. So Tier 1 is 1€, Tier 2 is 2€, Tier 3 is 3€. For further details on the tiers and their perks you can look at our donation page. It is elaborate (and visually pleasing, if we may) and trying to fit the information presented there in this post would do it no justice.
Donations are handled entirely transparently. Transaction log will be implemented later.
The flow of money, incoming as well as outgoing, will be publicly visible here.
What will happen to the old server?
As of the moment this post is published, the current GFL server will redirect players to the new server.
Do I get to keep my donator/VIP?
For the first month, donators and VIPs will get Tier 2 and Tier 3 donator status respectively for free. After this month however, VIPs (as well as donators naturally) will lose their donator status, meaning the permanent VIP they enjoyed will effectively be void.
This is indeed regrettable, however, a sustainable income model is an absolute necessity.
If you have recently (less than 180 days) purchased VIP on GFLClan.com, it might be possible to get your money back. I suggest you to make a PayPal Dispute. I have talked to Roy (the owner of GFL) about this and have confirmed that GFL is now using a new PayPal account which is owned by Roy. The PayPal account that you have donated to, if you donated before the 18th of April, is owned by SoJa, who is no longer affiliated with GFL. This means that you can make a dispute without risking a ban or any other consequences. I highly recommend you to do this solely because of the fact that SoJa was stealing donation money ($15k+).
Will the admin team move over, too?
Every current admin will be welcomed with open arms to administrate on the new server.
Why are you using GFLClan.ru as the name?
Mainly because we're aiming to replace GFL ZE in its entirety. "GFL ZE" is a well-known phrase within the zombie escape community, we don't feel the need to get rid of another familiarity in ZE.
we also don't want to end up with some random edgy name like n3xt :p
